I had a conversation with one of the upstream authors about 
this and the behaviour seems to be:

Yes I agree, having this dialog switched on for tests I 
agree that this behaviour feels strange. Especially if you 
search for a specific desktop and you have to switch your 
eyes from one monitor to the other this is bad.

I opened a bug in the upstream bugzilla for this, see:
