The new X11 is no longer in experimental, and I started seeing the
problem myself when it hit lenny.

There's a diagnosis and patch from Mike Stroyan (attached to both bug
reports) which is reported to fix the issue, although at the cost of
high CPU. The high CPU may be an artifact of an earlier version of the
patch. Anyway, I'm currently experimenting with that patch.
