That's not a valid regex -- you want to use $ apt-cache search .\*-dbg and read about regular expressions, for instance at the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_expression or this site: http://www.regular-expressions.info/ apt uses POSIX regular expressions.
