5) Choose directory (i.e. '/av/music/rock') 6) Listen to
music (can do shuffle mode by clicking on 'RAND' button
xmms2 - 1) Read a bunch of man pages and wikis 2) Start the daemon from
the command line (since no '/etc/init.d' entry exists 3)
Open another command line window if you don't know about
running something in the background. 4) type in gxmms2 5) Right
click to get a context menu, search around for something akin
to play directory. 6) Nothing but stuff about Search, mLib,
playlists, etc. When did xmms start trying to become a
client/server version of Windows Media Player (with a worse UI)?
7) Read more man pages and wikis, learn about SQL databases,
attempt to build a media library, job runs about 10 minutes
before cancelling. 8) Give up, build m3u playlists by hand
and use real player.
Please, put the functionality back in. I can read and write bash scripts
and maintain configuration files but many users can't, and
listening to music is one of the first things a new user wants to do out of the
box. They can learn how to do the other stuff if they want
but they'll want to be listening to music while they do it. This upgrade too
something clean and simple that worked just fine for most
peoples' purposes and made it complex and unwieldy without the basic features
that made the previous version nice.
