Some more information: the "apache" was in state "config-file" so /etc/init.d/apache was still available, once I purged it, the configuration went fine. It's probably "/etc/init.d/apache restart" that was failing..
The debconf DB said: sympa/use_wwsympa true sympa/wwsympa_configured true wwsympa/webserver_restart true wwsympa/webserver_type Apache I think I didn't use debconf when I moved my configuration from apache1 to apache2. In any case, the postinst script should be resilient to such user initiated changes.
