I'm using open-iscsi, version 2.0.869.2-2, backported from Lenny to
Etch, with those steps:
========================================================================
=
$ wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/open-iscsi/open-
iscsi_2.0.869.2-2.dsc
$ wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/open-iscsi/open-
iscsi_2.0.869.2.orig.tar.gz
$ wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/open-iscsi/open-
iscsi_2.0.869.2-2.diff.gz
$ cd open-iscsi-2.0.869.2
$ dpkg-source -x open-iscsi_2.0.869.2-2.dsc
$ dpkg-buildpackage
# dpkg -i ../open-iscsi_2.0.869.2-2_amd64.deb

Adding a 10 second delay into /etc/init.d/open-iscsi start script I
solve the problem.. I think that "Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II"
needs some time become ready, there's no way to solve/check this into
open-iscsi before trying to login into the iSCSI target?
Running Etch x86_64, with default kernel 2.6.18-6-amd64, backporting
Lenny's open-iscsi package, 2.0.869.2-2.
