FYI,
I just got connected to the right people in the zSeries Linux group in
Germany, and they are suggesting to me that the CMS label is really
more of a partition thing, and the right fix may be in the kernel, to
restrict the partition seen by mke2fs to exclude the RECOMP area.
Their only concern is some potential backwards compatibility problems,
but they're noodling over that. But it may be that no changes to
e2fsprogs are needed at all, just a kernel patch. We'll see. There
are all sorts of complexities here with how this fits into the System
z's boot path that I don't understand, but I will definitely defer to
their vastly greater exprience in things z-related.
I've also taken the liberty of forwarding your zipl request to them
(bug #486526) to see what they think.
Of course, no guarantees but we have some very smart people (with more
importantly the right s390 knowledge base) looking over your request.
