(to the submitter, apologies for the delay, this got lost in the pile)

it seems that the latest cacti for etch FTBFS since the latest etch security 
update (reported in #482533).  the cause seems to be a missing patch, which 
was deleted in the same series of uploads, according to my vcs' import logs.  
as a refresher -3.4 was a regression fix after the upload of -3.3 which 
locked users out of the webapp.

i believe that the patch in question should be restored, the 
recommendations/patch from the OP notwithstanding.

shall i prepare an update?  for reference the relevant log+diffstat are 
included below.
