On my system, this is what I get:
$ /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display x-session-manager
x-session-manager - status is manual.
 link currently points to /usr/bin/gnome-session
/usr/bin/openbox-session - priority 50
 slave x-session-manager.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/openbox-session.1.gz
/usr/bin/startkde - priority 40
 slave x-session-manager.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/startkde.1.gz
/usr/bin/gnome-session - priority 50
 slave x-session-manager.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/gnome-session.1.gz
Current `best' version is /usr/bin/openbox-session.

It would seem that openbox-session is being installed with the same
priority as gnome-session, and somehow openbox-session comes out on
top as the "best" version. I would argue that equal priority to the
out of the box installed default (by selecting "Desktop" in tasksel as
run by the Debian installer) is too high. Something along the lines of
KDE's 40, or possibly lower given the non-standard nature of openbox
might be more appropriate.
