Sometimes, mpd wastes 25% CPU on my Core 2 Duo. This seems a known bug due to libao. There is a workaround on MPD wiki: http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Troubleshooting_Libao However, this just reduces CPU usage to 5% on my machine. Another work around is to pause/unpause.
