Well, on Debian we provide a libtool that works well with Debian -dev
packages.  It's not just newer, it specifically has patches for this
exact issue.

But since apparently libtool static linking is broken (at least in
Debian) and nobody has noticed, maybe it is time to drop specific
support for libtool static linking, by removing my .la files.  libtool
will still function fine without .la files, for dynamic linking, and
then it won't get confused by those dependency_libs settings.
