If you have a harddisk as 0:0 booted kernel with root=/dev/sda1
then grub-install /dev/sda
then change in VMware this disk to 0:1 and in BIOS to boot first from 0:1
grub boots fine
If you boot the system as above
Shame on me, I wanted to make it very clear on this report and then didn't :)
I only meant harddisk 0:0 booted with root=/dev/sda1
not the 0:1 disk booted
