I agree that the "Unknown" error is confusing, however it does not pose a security risk. The 2M size is a consideration, and there isn't a good reason to bloat the normal package just to avoid confusion.
It does make sense to backport the -extra package to etch. That is bug #490185, and I'll mark this a duplicate of that one.
