Purging is not an option -- we are transitioning people on up to
300 machines.

However, it seems that neither mpich-bin nor lam-runtime currently
(as of lenny) use the 'mpiexec' alternatives class. Instead, they
register a class 'mpirun' only. Did I miss something?
