I am another user with this 0x0 screen size problem. I am using Debian
lenny.

I have just installed an unpatched xscreensaver 5.07 and the problem
persists on my system. I included the text of the verbose/debug log at
the end of this message as well as the output of xdpyinfo.

If I can do more to help debug this, let me know! Thanks!

xscreensaver: 16:41:02: Warning: running in DEBUG MODE. Be afraid.

Note that in debug mode, the xscreensaver window will only
cover the left half of the screen. (The idea is that you
can still see debugging output in a shell, if you position
it on the right side of the screen.)

Debug mode is NOT SECURE. Do not run with -debug in
        untrusted environments.
