Here xscreensaver (run under job control here) exits almost immediately, but there is a several second delay before xscreensaver-command gives up waiting for a response. I'm not really sure what triggered the problem -- I was stupid enough to do a major kernel upgrade, move the computer in question physically, and change the driver for my wireless, all in the space of a day.
