zlib1g-dev is in that line and zlib1g-dev contains libz.so. Furthermore sparc 
is the only architecture where the package FTBFS with this error (though it 
FTBFS on most architectures for other reasons :( )

can you reproduce the issue and if so can you supply the config.log so we can 
see the real reason why configure is failing.
