You have been misinformed. An actual installable file such as
proftpd_1.3.1-13_all.deb is never referred to as a "pseudo-package".
"apt-cache search pseudo-package" gets one hit.
"apt-cache search meta-package" gets about twenty.
"apt-cache search metapackage" gets over 150.
Unhyphenated "metapackage" is the form generally recommended on the
debian-l10n-english list.
