the output of $ /usr/bin/dbus-send --session --dest=org.freedesktop.PowerManagement - --type=method_call --print-reply --reply-timeout=2000 /org/freedesktop/PowerManagement org.freedesktop.PowerManagement.Suspend when run as root is: Failed to open connection to session message bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. So I think I have a "similar but slightly different problem". I don't know if that matters, but I am using xmonad as window manager, just like Nikolay A. Panov who reported #496911. My xorg version is 1:7.3+15.
