Some commands like "show" and "why", "why-not", needn't try to lock
/var/lib/dpkg/lock
# aptitude show scim-gtk2-immodule
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another
process using it?
Package: scim-gtk2-immodule
State: installed...

This would help speed those commands too.

OK, make attempting locking a configuration option off by default if
you must.

Often one wants to check details of a proposed deletion by using the
show command in a different shell window.

Anyway, locking is for when you plan to write.

Yes, some details might be in flux, but then you would want to quite
right away. Yes, you could print a warning: "somebody is changing
things, the following might be in flyx" if you insist.
