It turns out non-starting part of the bug only appears when using using a $HOME that had GNOME on it at one time, then XFCE and doing a fresh install of the system (e.g. only $HOME is the same). So aptitude is installing useless packages, but for most users they will not block the startup of xfce. So this bug can safely be downgraded. I did a test fresh install on a separate machine to determine this. --- System information. --- Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 Debian Release: lenny/sid 500 testing security.debian.org 500 testing debian.yorku.ca 500 stable security.debian.org 500 stable debian.yorku.ca --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed ================================================-+-==================== libapt-pkg-libc6.7-6-4.6 | libc6 (>= 2.7-1) | 2.7-13 libcwidget3 | 0.5.12-1 libept0 (>= 0.5.20) | 0.5.22 libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1) | 1:4.3.1-9 libncursesw5 (>= 5.6+20071006-3) | 5.6+20080804-1 libsigc++-2.0-0c2a (>= 2.0.2) | 2.0.18-2 libstdc++6 (>= 4.2.1) | 4.3.1-9 libxapian15 | 1.0.7-3 zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4) | 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 -- And that's my crabbing done for the day.
