This doesn't match my experience: a simple space doesn't change the focus here. However, CTRL+space always change the focus whatever I select in the preferences. After further tests, it seems that you have to restart Zim if you want the new preference to be taken into account. But otherwise it works as expected. I have the same version of libgtk2-perl than you (1:1.190-1).
