If you already have a registered nick on some $IRC_SERVER, Try the
following:

 * launch irssi with no arguments, and make sure ~/.irssi/config
   contains no autoconnect stanzas.

 * /load otr

 * /connect $IRC_SERVER

 * try to authenticate to your nickserv, usually done with:
   /msg nickserv identify $PASSWORD

In my attempts, the nickserv gets confused (presumably by the OTR
trimmings), and refuses to authenticate the user.

If i "/unload otr" and then try to re-authenticate, it works out fine.

Is there a way to exempt messages to certain parties from the OTR
handshakes? Until most nickserv daemons support OTR (which would be a
good thing!) it seems like OTR should not get in the way of user
authentication.
