All I know is that the one I installed with SuSE 11.0 on my desk top is: $ smartd --version smartd 5.39 2008-05-08 21:56 [x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-8 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net Also, the version that announces itself as 5.38 does *not* parse -R.
