Since I maintain the package in both Debian and Ubuntu, I can assure you
that the package in intrepid, the current development version of ubuntu,
is nearly the same as in debian.

The user experience (or better developer) experience is better served
here, since the code doesn't immediatly explode on other distributions
that don't have this change in. I strongly recommend to propose such
patches upstream so that ffmpeg behaves similar on all linux distros.
