first of all for others who suffer from a similar problem. 1. If you have access to a different computer with a floppy drive or CD burner, you can use grub-mkrescue or install grub-rescue-pc to get a floppy or CD to boot your system. 2. If 1 is not applicable, I found the only solution is to find a computer (or use qemu) where you have installed or can install GRUB Legacy. Then you can use one of the howtos available on the Internet to prepare a boot media (e. g. USB drive) to boot your system. Status update follows in the next message. Paul
