I have ESD installed, but it isn't running. I always make sure it is turned off (in Sound Preferences) and try to ensure only alsa is being used (PulseAudio doesn't work on this machine). When the problem is evident, I try to find processes that might be using the sound card like this: sudo lsof | grep dsp But nothing appears there.
