What you're reporting sounds more like the bug where an unnecessary warning message is printed after an "aptitude update". I can reproduce this with sarge's aptitude, but not with the aptitude in experimental.
It's not unnecessary. The upgrade is *aborted* as aptitude goes into read-only mode.
