As matter of fact if you tell fontconfig to use the auto hinter for Vera
you won't see this problem with the Debian FreeType package either. But
of course switching to the auto hinter means that a) FreeType's bytecode
interpreter and b) Vera's hinting instructions won't be used anymore. So
the bug may be in either...

I know for a fact that Vera has a number of hinting bugs, but on the
other hand FreeType has had its share of bugs, too (plus the Debian
package isn't exactly up to date). So I'd say it's about 50:50. ;)

FreeType currently is basically unmaintained in Debian, however Will
Newton said he was going to pick it up, so I'm ccing him. Will, see the
bug log for details; free feel to reassign this if you feel it's likely
to be a FreeType bug.
