I experience the same symptoms on a Q33 chipset (X3100), too. X crashes saying "fatal server error: lockup", th edisplay looks corrupt, then I'm booted back to a console. I can't restart X, and can only do so after a reboot.
However, I have been able to semi-reliably reproduce the problem using the 'osd_cat' program. It doesn't crash *consistently*, but does crash say, 5 times out of 10.
