I'm afraid I no longer run Freevo on the machine that was causing the problems - I've changed to another package for a variety of reasons not relating to this. I have, however, just replicated the setup on a different machine and the headlines are working well for me with v1.8.1-2, so as far as I'm concerned I'd be happy for the bug to be closed, as the problems seems to be a problem with my original configuration or with v1.8.1-0 (which would be difficult for me to check right now).
