I'm not entirely sure if this is the same issue yet, but wanted to add that there's a similar issue in Ubuntu with xournal, which was actually an issue in libgnomecanvas.
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgnomecanvas/+bug/272316 There's a debdiff attached to that, so until I have time to check, someone might be able to solve this using that.
