Hi Arnaud, don't open the .pdf.gz files directly, just use the texdoc command, e.g.
texdoc latex-make
* you don't have to worry about the path to the file
* you don't have to worry about decompressing it
As it looks, all LaTeX documentation in Debian comes compressed and is
easily viewed with texdoc.
