IMHO, because the package fails to achieve its main goal which is
providing accurate information.

I agree that your mileage may vary, but I was really puzzled to see
that simple fixes were not corrected, leading /me to conclude that the
package is not actively maintained.

So, the main point of the bug is suggesting its removal from the
archive for that reason.

ISO-3166 changes since last upload and the only purpose of the package
is giving information about it.

So, my conclusion was drawn: loosely maintained package.

Last changes in ISO-3166:
- MD renamed to "Moldova"
- Added Saint-barthélémy and Saint-Martin
- several changes to official names of countries (Nepal, Bahrain,
Moldova) but maybe countrycodes doesn't care about official names
- Numeric code updated for Serbia

They would, imho. We had some updates for iso-codes that were accepted
so you can for sure ask for freeze exceptions.

Well, still, I'm not sure that this upstream is still alive. So,
probably you deserve my apologies: the package is not loosely
maintained, but upstream is...:-)

Well, it was even installed on my system, for a reason I can't
explain....and without me to be aware of this (I very well may have
installed it very logn time ago, even before iso-codes came out)

Agreed.

Still, you can probably patch countrycodes to reflect the last changes
in ISO-3166 and I think it would be accepte for lenny, even though
this is code.
