Unfortunately, that wasn't successful. I've purged grub-common and grub-pc, deleted /boot/grub, installed grub2 1.96+20080724-12, did update-grub, grub-install. Still the same problem. Maybe it's got something to do with the 3ware RAID controller? Cheers, harry PS: this issue is not urgent for me, because it affects only one machine which is not in production use anymore.
