Same here (Lenny / i386 / intel 915GM/1.73GHz Centrino).
It doesn't seem to be linked to any specific hardware for sure - but it
still looks a lot like software-rendering - or perhaps not?
Reducing resolution does not noticeably help - down to a resolution of
3x2 windowed... nor does --no-particles
It's a python process alone, that eats up 100% of the CPU, not
Xorg and python.
Another python game using pythongl "snowballz" seems to run ok.
On an aside that the audio might slow things down:
Switching the music off (by editing music.py and returning from everythin)
doesn't lead to an increased speed either...
