Just to be sure: Have you compiled network-manager(-gnome) yourself and installed e.g. into /usr/local? Could you please send me the output of ldd /usr/bin/nm-applet and objdump -T /usr/lib/libnm-util.so.0 You need to install binutils for objdump.
