This package downgrade fixed the problem: I removed the gnumeric 1.8.3 package from my Lenny rc1 installation and replaced it with the gnumeric 1.6.3 package which came with my original Etch DVD, following the instructions given in the Debian Reference at sections 6.2.5 and 6.3.3.
