I am no longer nearly so certain that what I am seeing is the same bug.

I have noticed that the same ugly-font problem is, in some cases,
occurring in images as well as in normal text - images which I remember
quite clearly being non-ugly before the change happened.

Specifically, the text in the images down the right-hand side of the
page at

http://mother3.fobby.net/index.php

show what looks like the same problem as I see elsewhere. Unfortunately,
this makes it hard to show the difference to others, since any
screen-captures I might make would probably look identical to the
original images on any given machine.

This means that what I am seeing is almost certainly not a font-related
issue as such (and thus could not be bug in fontconfig-config), though
it does so far manifest only in displayed text. I'm more or less stumped
as to what it *could* be; the primary candidate would seem to be my
video driver, but I haven't changed that since before the problem
started (although I have recompiled it once in the interim, to get GL
working again after an X-package update broke it - something which
happens on a regular basis).

Someone in #debian suggested that it might be bad xorg.conf settings or
a failing monitor; that doesn't seem terribly likely to me, since A: I
don't remember changing xorg.conf recently and B: the problem manifests
only in certain programs, but I can't necessarily rule it out. I'm going to test with a different monitor later, but cannot do so for now.

Assuming that the test with another monitor shows the same problem, any
idea of what might have caused this, whether or not it might actually
qualify as any kind of bug, and (if so) where might be appropriate to
report that bug?
