Well, that at least helps clarify things. Does the affected machine
work at all with a standard Debian kernel?

Identifying whether it works with standard vs non-standard kernels (if
all else is equal) is still helpful and worth the moreinfo tag.

I'm not using a virtual environment. I am using laptops (two different
architectures) with stock Debian kernels.
