Oops, missed an important point in my original mail. I'm hoping this will go in to upstream, but with the size of this patch I'm not expecting it to become a Debian patch. I put this one in to the BTS as I think you're keeping track of everything in the BTS (and there doesn't seem to be an upstream BTS).
