While I probably think the severity is closer to wishlist than the
original submitter thinks it is, I'm voting in favor of adding this
functionality.  ifrename and the like provide logical names for other
interfaces; PPP interfaces should be able to have these too, and based
on my limited knowledge of Debian network configuration, I see no good
way to implement it outside of pppd itself.

I have not reviewed the patch submitted by the original submitter, but
informationally, it appears that some other GNU/Linux distributions,
such as SuSE, apply similar patches to their distributed forms of
pppd.

(I also see that the report has been sitting in the BTS for over a
year with no response.  I'm not sure what to make of this.  If there's
a reason to avoid doing this, I'd like to hear it.)
