Shell arrays sound find, please try it! It's a problem because of a separate bug in dpkg-buildpackage, that it's rejecting entries in the Uploaders: field in debian/control. I'm trying to work around that problem in pdebuild by giving a -k option to --debbuildopts, but then I'm running against the problem in this bug report!
