IIRC, the startup problem is that eclipse wants to show the 'welcome' page in html and wants to use xulrunner for that. This trick (empty dir) probably causes it to not display this page, so it starts correctly. If you want to do something equivalent that does not involve messing with dirs under /usr/lib, you can just put -Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.XULRunnerPath= in your eclipse.ini after vmargs, or just use that from the command line.
