Bug 509942 is a bit broader-scoped than this one, but I saw it before I noticed this one, and attached the patch to add detection of git packs and indexes over there. (Note that there's a magic number conflict with Quake .PAK files, which I managed to kludge around.) I can reattach the patch over here if that's preferred.
