Following up to myself, my plan (which has been delayed by other commitments) is to package the funambol client library seperately, but using a version suitable for syncevolution. You can follow that at

As I said in my last message, I think the AGPL issues discussed in that thread (short of something like a GR to overide the ftpmasters) can be consider closed.
