What do you mean by "looking in the index"? In my sid system here, I launch "info octave3.1", type "i" followed by "split<return>" and then I go to the appropriate page. At any rate, it is very strange that you are getting this "Variable Index" message. The variable index has been dropped in Mercurial changeset 674d00f5e072.
