I have tried switching back to libesd-alsa0 and downgrading all related packages to 0.2.36-3 Things were working again. I have then upgraded the packages one by one to the current version, and rebooted between each, first with esound, then esound-common. After upgrading libesd-alsa0, things were not working any more. I now run with both libesd-alsa0 and esound-client 0.2.36-3 and things are OK. I hence reassign this bug to libesd-alsa0 Hope this helps.
