Hello, I received the same error "The application cannot be started. The user interface language cannot be determined." on a Lenny stable 32 bit system.
It was due to ~/.openoffice.org2/ being owned by root:root. I could resolve the problem with sudo chown myuser:mygroup ~/.openoffice.org2/ -R Best regards Xypron -- Psssst!
