I was more or less ignoring this problem until the release of Lenny. I looked into this, and the problem has already been fixed upstream. As soon as ICU 4.2 is released, which should be fairly soon, I plan on doing a transition to that version. In the unlikely event that debian transitions to gcc 4.4 before ICU 4.2 is uploaded, I will include a patch for this.
